In Education,

Connection Changes Everything

A Career Built Around Connection

When students feel a sense of belonging, they are more likely to engage, take risks, and grow.

Dr. Dennis Eastman (Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University) has spent more than three decades as an Educational Architect, designing learning environments, shaping schools, educators, and young people, and building the conditions where growth becomes possible. His career has included roles as a Social Studies teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, Director of New Faculty Development, and principal in Santa Ana, where he worked with faculty and students to earn recognition from U.S. News & World Report as one of the most improved schools in California. Currently, he serves as Professor and Director of Secondary Education at Biola University, where he prepares future teachers to serve students in diverse local and international settings. His work, both nationally and internationally, focuses on helping educators create inclusive, engaging learning environments that foster connection, motivation, and meaningful participation, because when people feel they belong, everything else becomes possible.

Why does being connected matter?

Recent research shows that loneliness is at an all-time high, affecting children, adolescents, and adults alike. Many individuals experience a persistent sense of being unseen, unknown, and disconnected.

This absence of connection can lead to difficulty handling emotions, withdraw, and challenges in developing a strong sense of identity.

However, when students feel genuinely seen, known, and valued, engagement increases, behavior becomes more positive, and learning deepens.

Connection is not an enhancement to the learning process; it is foundational.

Being Connected Starts with Four Questions

How do I feel?

Am I interested?

Does this have value?

Can I do this?‍ ‍

As Dr. Robert Marzano encourages us to consider four essential questions about student engagement, we can also apply these same questions to help students and young people feel genuinely connected.

These are not just academic questions. They are human questions. Dr. Eastman equips educators, parents, caregivers, and communities to help every young person answer them with confidence.
